The back panel continues through a rubberized control panel, including power buttons, Bluetooth pairing, play/pause and volume. So that’s one difference between XB22 and XB23. Sony has made yet another clever design choice by placing the USB Type-C port beneath the flap, but there is no USB Type-A port or 3.5-millimeter auxiliary jack. There’s soft-touch rubber on the inside, and there are dual passive radiators on the outsides of this speaker.Īnother nice touch is that the function buttons run straight along the center, and the battery, party, and stereo pair buttons have been moved out from below the flap to a more accessible location where the other buttons are. It’s not the soft touch rubber we saw on the XB33 instead, it’s more of a hard plastic, but only on the outside. In terms of design, Sony decided for a full cylinder shape, with the cloth mesh extending all the way around the body except for the ends. The power and Bluetooth keys both have a lovely LED lighting, and the party boost button uses real Wireless Stereo technology to pair two-party boost compatible speakers for full stereo music. You’ll also find all the controls you require. I didn’t drop it on purpose, but it appears and feels as if it could take a battering.
The speaker’s build quality is also outstanding, and it feels like a well-made piece of equipment. The Flip 5’s possibilities for connection are now limited to more Flip 5s or the Pulse 4, which is a stumbling barrier for individuals who already possess one or more JBL speakers.
